В этом уроке мы разберём, как правильно использовать слова another, the other, other, others, the others. В русском языке у них есть аналоги: ещё один, другой, остальные. Представьте, как часто мы используем эти выражения в разговорной речи! Уверенное использование этих слов поможет сделать ваши высказывания точнее и избежать недопонимания.

1. Another vs The Other

Another — ещё один, ещё
То есть, всегда когда вам необходимо сказать «ещё один» или «ещё» вы используете — another. 

Он попросил ещё стакан воды.
He asked for another glass of water.

Дай мне ещё один листок бумаги, пожалуйста.
Give me another sheet of paper, please.

Another — другой (какой-нибудь)

Эта ручка не пишет. Дай мне другую ручку (какую-нибудь), пожалуйста.
The pen doesn’t work. Give me another pen, please.

После слова «другую» можно убрать слово «ручку» 

The pen doesn’t work give me another. 

Этот дом нам не подходит. Мы хотели бы посмотреть другой (какой-нибудь).
This house doesn’t work for us. We would like to see another house.
We would like to see another one.
We would like to see another.

Another + число
Another + few

Нам нужно ещё два дня, чтобы закончить проект.
We need another two days to finish the project.

Он заказал ещё четыре банки пива.
He ordered another four cans of beer.

Они решили остаться ещё на две недели.
They decided to stay for another two weeks.

Он задержался ещё на несколько минут.
He lingered another few minutes.

Another не используется с неисчисляемыми существительными и существительными во множественном числе. Вместо another в таком случае используем more.

The Other — «другой» (последний из указанных) 

У меня есть две ручки. Одна синяя, другая красная.
I have got two pens. One pen is blue, the other pen is red.
One is blue, the other is red.

Так как указано что ручек две «другая» перевели как «the other»

В ванной есть три полотенца: одно полотенце для рук, другое полотенце для лица и другое полотенце для ног.
There are three towels in the bathroom. One towel is for the hands, another towel is for the face, and the other towel is for the feet.

Так как сказано что полотенец три то есть указано сколько и где, последнее слово «другое» перевели как «the other». 

Одно для рук, другое для лица и другое для ног.
One is for the hands, another one is for the face and the other is for the feet.

One is for the hands, another is for the face and the other is for the feet.

2. Other(s) — другие (вообще, в принципе)

Здесь не будет сказано ни сколько, ни где. 

Некоторые люди едят мясо, другие плюди редпочитают овощи (вообще, в принципе все люди).
Some people eat meat, other people prefer vegetables.
Some people eat meat, other ones prefer vegetables. Так как существительное было во множественном числе, «one» тоже во множественном числе.
Some people eat meat, others prefer vegetables.

Если убрали существительное во множественном числе то к слову «другие» — «other» нужно добавить окончание «s» 

3. The Other(s) — остальные (предметы или люди из уже известных или указанных)

Я купила четыре иголки. Одну из них я оставлю себе, остальные иголки отдам сестре.
I have bought four needles. One of them I keep for myself, I will give the other needles to my sister. (известно какие иголки отдам те которые купила, поэтому понадобился артикль the перед other).
One of them I keep for myself, I will give the other ones to my sister.
One of them I keep for myself, I will give the others to my sister. 

Если убрали существительное во множественном числе то к слову «другие» «the other» нужно добавить окончание «S»
